I've been looking further into this and found engine validated the fields before the before triggers - this is wrong since the before trigger will bark the record as mutating anyhow it can safely run the fefore trigger before it applies and table level stuff.
I can get round it by applying defaults to required fields but I'll raise a bug to get it sorted
