How to remove a backend server without restarting

I think I have most of my setup done with proper read/write splitting but have not found a means of manually removing a backend server from the read only status without doing one of the two items

1. restart mysql-proxy with different flags
2. restarting the read only server and letting mysql-proxy detect a failure

I have been looking through the admin scripts and not seen anything that allows something to be passed like the following via the admin port remove backend <IP>

This would be used in the case of say a table crash on a slave or some work being done on the server
