Cross-platform graphics makes sense in principle, but OpenGL has issues with much graphics hardware currently in use. It's hard to predict how many potential community users will be shut out by Workbench's reliance on full OpenGL compatibility in graphics hardware, and on newish operating systems. Time will tell.
