Geoffrey,

double click such a relationship in the diagram which will open the relationship editor. In this editor you can play with the settings and see what happens. In your case switching from/to "Identifying Relationship" will also switch between dashed and solid line. You can find a number of resources on the Internet explaining identifying relationships.
