Ronald,

try "localhost" instead as address. Also, double check the server is actually running. I don't know what the default settings in MAMP Pro are but it could be (even though rather unlikely) that root is not allowed to connect from the local machine. Try also using a socket rather than TCP/IP. Networking could be disabled by default as well. There is no need to use another tool to create a new database first. When you can connect from the command line you should also be able to connect from WB.
