Mike,

I mentioned that I had checked the instance mananger in my original message. What was there (set up by the Gentoo installation scripts, I suppose, but am not certain) worked fine until akonadi started using mysql, so the ps command still returned something even if the mysql server was down. Based on the bug I mentioned in an earlier post, it looks like this has been a problem in the past. However, the solution in the bug report looks like it will only work for certain installations.

I now have the status check command set to "/etc/init.d/mysql status" but it appears I could also use "pgrep -u mysql mysql" which might be a bit more efficient, and would should also work on other distributions.

I've edited my original post to add [SOLVED].
