SOLVED !!

The problem is that workbench can't cope with different database releases.

Local I had the latest 5.7 and remote I had 5.5.37

Normally you would expect a tool like workbench to be able to cope with older databases (downward compatible) but it can't. Partly because of, I think, lazy or non-developer oriented, programming.

So I downgraded the local MySQL server to 5.5.37 (that's 1.5 years back in time) and picked the old workbench version 5.2.37.

Hurray I could access both databases again.

Also I found that the workbench installer version 5.7.9 embeds a faulty/buggy MYSQLDUMP!!!

I wonder why?
It's a long time known problem, The Installer has not been changed yet and they did not put up a notice or urge you to install and reference a working MYSQLdump.
