I don't know the examples in that book, so it would be helpful if you could just pick one and we discuss that here. It's essential that you select the right section in MySQL Workbench for your tasks. If you want to run queries against a MySQL server or want to manage such a server you need to open a a connection to it from the homescreen. If you however want to design a schema then you should start in the modeling section (either by loading an existing model or creating a new one).
