Local server not connecting

Hi everyone,

New to MySQL and it was working fine, but now I am not getting the client to connect to the local server... seems very strange.

I have been through the MySQL server documentation including how to start it, I get an error message from Windows when trying to start the server from the command line saying that it can't create the data directory, but the data directory is set as the default pathway in the MySQL options.

It happens to me both on the command line prompt interface and the MySQL workbench GUI.

On command prompt, when I enter my password, it just shuts down and dissapears.
On workbench, when i open it, it can't establish a connection....I have fiddled with the options in the server settings and can't seem to get it to connect.

It runs fine when I install it, but after I have closed it down for the first time and then boot it up the next time, it won't ever connect....seems very strange. I have to uninstall, then reinstall it to get a connection.

Any help would be much appreciated.
