Yes sudden power outages do that. Think about it---when power goes off suddenly, software is powerless to write out unsaved buffers. A UPS prevents such losses. A few minutes of protection will cost you $50.

?! Autosave saves work that hasn't yet been sent to the OS for writing to disk. Backups copy data that has been written to disk. We all need to backup our work often enough to prevent losses like the one you describe.
