Thanks for the information Peter. I would like to eventually connect from a remote location, so that is very helpful.
As it happens I was connecting over a WiFi LAN, and I was able to successfully resolve the problem myself after trawling through a lot of similar threads.
I needed to comment out the line binding the ip address to 127.0.0.1 in the file /etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d/mysqld.cnf and then stopping and starting the server
this seemed to work.
