Ransomware corrupted MySQL database

I just received a disk in the mail from someone who hopes I can help recover a MySQL database that was compressed by ransamware. They paid for the key and everything uncompressed successfully except the MySQL database.

I have not administrated a MySQL database in over eight years. I am looking for help from someone who knows why the database did not uncompress well, and what tools are available in the MySQL suite that might help repair it enough to at least extract the data.

The disk contains the data files and support files but they will not restore to the MySQL engine. I don't know from looking at the folders how to know what else to say about the version, structure, other. My first thought is to install the community version of MySQL and the Manager. For some reason there are no backups prior to the attack (this was not my client and I don't know why that is). But, I have been told the database will not attach and I have not been supplied with any error codes from past attempts.
I would like to figure out how to get at least some of the data extracted even if I can't repair it enough to become operational again.

Any advice on how to get started would be apprciated
