Upgrade past 5.6

I'm running a small Wordpress site at my office that is still using MySQL 5.6. The site is running on 2012 Server R2 and IIS 8. I know MySQL 5.7 was a big upgrade and I saw the list of things that could break. I'm looking to see if the best plan would be to export my WP database from 5.6, uninstall 5.6 from my server, install a newer version of MySQL and then import the old 5.6 database? Would it be better to upgrade to 5.7 and see how that goes before trying the latest version of MySQL?

Thanks,
Andy
