Select returns data from wrong database

A server has two databases abc2 and abc21 retrieving data via a VB6 program using odbc. certain select statements are definitely returning data from the abc21 database even though all the odbc dsn's etc point to abc2. Is this a known problem due to the similarity of database names, a fluke or bug or what?

PS the names have been changed to protect the innocent but you should get the idea, also abc2 is the original and abc21 is a backup copy the previous IT guy created.
