Table names are used in file names (TableName.frm in all engines; .ibd, .MYD, etc depending on engine, partitioning, etc.)

Databases names are used as directory names.

Windows ignores case; Linux honors case. This forces MySQL to force the user to follow case rules for database and table names.

This implies that 3 tables: capname, CapName, CAPNAME could coexist (in the same database) on Linux, but not on Windows.
