These two statements seem to contradict each other:

In my lexicon, "host" = "machine"; "same IP" = "same machine".

These are (sort of) synonyms for what to connect to on the same machine: localhost, 127.0.0.1, ::1

There are two ways to connect -- via socket and via TCP/IP.

Please provide a list of what combinations (connection string and GRANT) that you have tried, and an indication of which work/fail.
