With a 5.0 client the engine estimated it had to read 1 `c` row, with a 5.5 nearly a million rows ... a radical diff.

Given an ancient 5.0 client that I don't have an instance of, with no DDL, without the whole query and with no sample data, I can't be sure of anything, but charsets & collations set in the client can materially affect query execution, so I'd want to check out that issue thoroughly.
