Please repeat your questions concerning performance in the "Performance" forum.
Concerning the open index file, I do not right understand, what you mean. As long as key blocks of an index are in the cache, the file must be open for quick reload of key blocks and for flushes on write. A key block is flushed whenever it is changed.
Concerning the usage of the key buffer, I would like to know, how you evaluated your numbers. If by showing system variables, please paste them. But you may be better off to do this in the "Performance" forum as well.
