I suggest that is not good accounting practice. A dead receipt should be voided and kept.

If this is not an "accounting" task, then, well, live with it. AUTO_INCREMENT values follow certain rules; those rules may not be exactly what you want. Furthermore, you will find differences between MyISAM and InnoDB, and different actions after a server crash. So, do not depend on anything other than generated ids will be distinct.
