My guess is:
mysql is trying to lock the index... and to get an auto-inc lock... and i suspect it doesn't do it in the same order - if it would be trying to acquire locks in the same order u wouldn't have a deadlock (but if u wouldn't commit the first transaction during a reasonable period of time your second transaction would timeout which is perfectly ok) . But it's not normal, there has to be another explanation... because that stuff that u r getting with a deadlock is not good...
