Hi Heikki,

Thanks for responding. It is still a bit crazy here and I forgot to say this previously.

Forgot to mention the we are using mysql 4.0.23 on the crashed Opteron and 4.0.13 on the slave replica.

Here is a 3rd recovery option:
The replica server appears to be coming up and was 30 minutes behind. If is does come up and we can get the master to stay up while serving binlog to the slave....then we could bring the slave up to a point within 1 second (or less) of the crash. Is this doable while we are in this state?

We should probably do a full backup of the replica before attempting anything like this; there may be master binlog corruption that could cause a slave error.
