Suggest setting innodb_buffer_pool_size to 70% of available RAM if you are using only InnoDB.

Well, even if you take away the auto_increment field or the PRIMARY KEY, InnoDB will still have a PRIMARY KEY. And it will do internal locking on the PK.

The PK will be (in order) chosen from this list:
1. User-stated PRIMARY KEY
2. The first UNIQUE index (with some caveat about NULLable fields)
3. A hidden BIGINT AUTO_INCREMENT -- The worst of all worlds.
