Hi Tom,
I'm guessing that this post is a corollary to the one you posted earlier, and that you're running MySQL on IBM i. (I don't think there's another OS that has a /QOpenSys directory!)
What is the path of the directory that you're in when you execute mysqld_safe?
Also, please post the contents of your /etc/my.cnf file.
