Thanks Jay. You are a fountain of good info.

Maybe you can shed some light on this one too. I'm coming to mySql from Progress and its very different.

I'm doing a ton of inserts (can't use load data infile because I need to do several checks on each line from the data file before deciding whether or not to insert it). I'm reading files of half a million to a million lines at a time and my insert times are very slow. Any db parameters I should check to make sure this is optimized?
