Turning off autocommit leaves you responsible to execute a COMMIT sooner or later. If you don't have a COMMIT, nothing will get done, and you run a big risk of deadlocks.

Either leave autocommit on all the time, or use BEGIN...COMMIT. The latter is better because it lets you execute multi-statement transactions.
