Greetings Rick,

I recall I forgot to address this question of yours:

Well I was seeking after the illusive "50 MB" a peer in the CiviCRM forum suggested their same query created to process the same query for their database with twice as many (200,000) contribution records. Their server also has, I found out later, 8GB of RAM.

So, I was quite shocked to see it still creating a 2GB tmp file with this client's server bumped up to 4GB RAM.

Since you say it must write the tmp file and not do such query processing in fast RAM, that to me made it a dead issue to continue investigation.

As for the CiviCRM forum peer member... I now hold their "50 MB" tmp query file statement in suspect.

I am thankful,
