I was looking for monotonically increasing keys, not sequential keys and auto_increment can do the former.

In either case, I think I found what I was looking for with the index_page_splits metric from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.INNODB_METRICS. In the tests I ran, there were ~40% more page splits on a table with an integer PK when inserts were random rather than ordered.
