Storage on AWS is quite expensive. Blockstorage is calculated on IOPs and more storage means more IOPS (because IOPs costs money but they can't give you 2tb with 'just' x IOPs, they give you 2tb + all IOPs the x blocks provide).

Besides that, handling the 500gb table is cumbersome and most tables are already converted to 5.6.
