Is it possible to optimize lock_sys->mutex?

Hi there!

I am studying InnoDB recently, and found the global mutex lock_sys->mutex becomes the main bottleneck in some scenario. Is it possible to apply some optimization on it, like fine-grained locking (segment the lock_sys->rec_hash into multiple hash tables and protect them by different mutexs)? Or are there some fundamental challenges?
