Phil, I'm so glad you finally solved the problem.

I must admit, the student_ethnicity_other stuff is new to me - I never guessed you wanted to involve that too into the sorting calculation.

Anyway, just for the record - where did you get the idea that you had to include the ethnicity_name column in the GROUP BY? I hope I didnt put you on the wrong track... (as far as I can see, I included either group_concat or the alias for the group_concat in the ORDER BY list, never in the GROUP BY list)
