The distance function is new, see http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/GIS_Functions
So while the bazaar tree with the new spatial functions is based on the 5.1 release, the official 5.1 release does not contain these new spatial features. This is why distance works in the gis binary you have used and not in the official release.
