Not sure about the bug/behaviour exhibited, but on your other question, GIS for spherical coordinates is different from planar spatial extensions in MySQL. And, no, I don't think the jibbery-jab will be going away anytime soon in the future. It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine too, but then again, it's mostly to do with the complexity of the implementation and the standards for spatial data and openGIS. See my recent post here for more:
