For anyone who might be interested, I got the answer today from Marc Lehmann himself:

"Well, "stable" is just another word for "dead" :)

So yes, it's a dead project then, as the last version produced was for gcc-2.95, and most changes were folded into gcc-3.

However, for pentium cpus pgcc should still be able to generate very good and small code, even compared to gcc-3 and possible -4."
