Strange. I've done a zillion SHOW PROCESSLISTs, often on sluggish systems, but have never seen this.

OTOH, there are reasons for things to stop -- involving locks between readers and writers, including the SQL thread of replication. (But I suspect you would have noticed that.)

It shouldn't matter, but what OS, what hardware, including disk? How much RAM? Are you at the point of swapping? Hmmm... Swapping is a no-no, so none of the machines I touch do such. Maybe that is your problem? If so, tune things to use less RAM.
