Thanks for your advice. An addition to my "is this as fast as it can get?" -- a simpler example:

To the 350+ million row table, I did a simple "alter table add column column_name varchar(255)"

I started it over 14 hours ago. It is still running.

Does that sound right?

Thanks -- much! -- for any insight you can provide. I'm just not sure if what we're trying to do is realistic within our time frame.
