Too many processes/too large?

Hi,
running MySQL 4.1 on RH FC3.
show processlist shows 20 processes, which I can account for.
However, at the cmd line, top shows 32 mysqld processes, and worryingly, each process apparently takes 2.3% of mem (ie 2.3% of 1GB) or about 24.7MB, which is pretty big considering most of them are sleeping at any given time.
Can anyone explain why there are 50% more OS processes, & why the enormous size of each?
Thx
Chris
