MySqld processes keeps growing in size

I am running mysql 4.0.18 on RHAT ent linux 3. The m/c has 4GB RAM, 400 gig HDD runs on dual xeon.
I am using huge settings for my.cnf. Thread concurrency is 8.
top shows the 27 mysqld processes to take RSS of 76M each.
Just 5 days ago each took 22M, then went to 29M etc.
As time goes swap space usage grows and soon the system spends most of the time on IOWAIT.

Please let me know how can I solve this problem
