Pivot tables look elegant but often are very costly to execute. The answer to your question Probably depends on the RDBMS, and certainly depends on what indexes are available. The main tool for estimating query efficiency in MySQL is EXPLAIN EXTENDED. Don't know what the comparable tool is in Oracle or SQL Server. You would have to run the queries through those tools in each RDBMS and compare the compare the answers.
