I think default for innodb_buffer_pool_size in 5.5 was 128M. How large is your database?
Without moving the predicates to WHERE, I do not think there is much the optimizer can do to improve this query.
I also recommend upgrading to MySQL 5.7. It will in many cases use query plans with a better join order. (You still need to have the predicates in WHERE, but straight_join should not be necessary.)
