I went ahead and reverted back to the old glibc (which meant re-installing the entire system) and it works fine again.
This is what I did if you're interested in reproducing the problem:
1) set up a cluster on 5.0.24
2) converted one of the data nodes to NPTL with glibc-2.4 and tried to start up that node again.
