To be able to process any transactions, the SQL nodes will have to wait for the data nodes to come up. If you are doing a system restart (restarting all nodes) then the data nodes can take a bit of time to go through the startup phases.

What do you mean by "periodically i have to reconnect the sql node as it refuses to join the cluster"? Does the mysqld crash? What are in the logs when the mysqld goes away?
