Running 2 big data nodes with 128 GByte of memory is quite ok.
So see no reason of splitting up into many smaller nodes.
A bit more work in configuring.

Ensure that you increase both NoOfFragmentLogParts and
number of threads used (NoOfFragmentLogParts should be equal
to number of LDM threads). Also ensure that MaxDiskWriteSpeed
is set appropriately on a bigger node to ensure that you
write your checkpoints at appropriate, a large database
requires higher disk write speed.
