A couple of hints what could cause the problem.
The limit is in bytes, not in characters.
This means that if you have a VARCHAR(255) defined
in a character set that uses multiple bytes per
character, this can be much more than 255 bytes.
Second BLOBs consume the fixed size part as part
of the 14000 bytes, this part is 256 bytes as far
as I can remember.
