Yes, NDB has a few MySQL Server options that are specific, but for the most part you should be good without using those. Obviously this means using the MySQL JDBC driver.

In Java one can benefit greatly by using ClusterJ which is a native API to NDB.
Very easy interface to ClusterJ in my opinion.
