replication died - just quit

hello there all,
i am having a problem getting master-slave replication to work on two ubuntu fiesty linux machines.

i got it working for a while, then it just stopped last night at close to 4:00 am.

i don't know why it quit,
the show slave status on the slave says that it is waiting for the master to send an event.
the show processlist on the master tells me that binlog has been sent to slave, waiting for slave to be updated.

it seemed only to replicate for an hour or so before it died.

is there a way i can update my slave db without having to dump everything? It took almost an hour to LOAD DATA FROM MASTER.

i believe that i have all the user permissions set up ok.

please let me know where to look first.
