same problem here with Portuguese accented characters (MySQL 4.022).

using LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE from a text file I get the following character changes:

á --> ß
í -->φ
ã-->π
ô-->⌠

I couldn't find anything in the manual or in the Web (Google).

Any indication of the solution will be greatly appreciated
