Currently there is no way; you have to do like you already do: get the data from memory to disk using the "start backup", then make Netbackup copy this disk data to tape.
We are working on making this more direct but this will not happen in the coming months.
PS: if Netbackup can be configured to read from a pipe instead of disk file, you could do a mysqldump and pipe the output to Netbackup. But for a large amount of data it may not be very fast. Still an idea...
