1. If you want a consistent dump, you need to avoid any writes during the dump. Your dumping technique probably forced that on you, hence the "locked" queries.

2. If you KILL mysql, you could have data corruption, especially MyISAM indexes -- recommend you do CHECK TABLE after coming back up.

3. To avoid stopping writes during a backup, set up replication, then backup the slave.
