restore error

hi! i was wondering if someone could help me with regards to backing up and restoring my MySQL database. what are my options for backing up a database? i mean, do i have any other option other than using mysqldump? i used mysqldump to backup a database, then when i tried to restore the SQL file, mysql generates an error:
Warning: Error while executing this query
what could be the problem? the backup file was created by mysqldump, now its telling me that the query that it created has errors.
