import remote database by connect to remote service

good day guys
to import a remote database on the local pc,
connect directly with the remote service and run a mysql dump, it might be an appropriate method, or is it not recommended?
and the second question, it is irrelevant to use: mysqldump from the command line or a dbmanager like mysql_workbench or SQLyog?

what has happened is
2GB of remote database, a size just too big to be imported with phpmydmin
in remote server there is not any ssh service,
the remote host has opened a door directly to the mysql service
I tried once to make the dump, but the result was a file .sql corrupt, my be a case,
so I suspect that this method is not appropriate,
there might be problems in the verification of tcp packages and their composition in the dump .sql file?
